Journal/15 Floréal CCXIV from Evan Prodromou

I started a new personal site today. I've had this domain for a while, but I haven't really done anything with it. Since we moved Wikitravel to the new servers at Internet Brands, I've decided to keep the old Wikitravel server active for personal projects such as this.

I had an idea that I'd start doing a blog; I've noticed that in several quarters it's hard to get someone to respond to a mailing list post or an IRC message, but if you have a blog entry on some subject, well, that's going to really mean something.

I also have to admit that now that Wikitravel is (safely) in the hands of a group of admins at IB, I'd like to have a public site to experiment with. I put a lot of my idiosyncratic ideas into Wikitravel's site architecture, and now I want to play with those ideas on another site.

So, I put together this one. I decided to create a wiki blog, both because I like wikis and because it's easier to work with. And I wanted to use Scheme, because it's my favorite programming language and I'd rather write lots of Scheme code than write lots of barfy PHP or Python or some other crap language.

Anyways, this site is now running WiLiKi, with some custom formatting code written by yours truly. The wiki engine definitely has its problems -- it's about a 3 out of 10 on the wiki features scale -- but it's a lot more fun to play with than other codebases.

Most of what I've been diddling with has been jibbery bits of XHTML and CSS... which are only very minorly fun. I haven't really started hacking at the Scheme parts, but I guess that will come soon.

All this to say that now I've got another toy to play with instead of going out in the beautiful Montreal summer. Whoop-de-doo.
