Journal/1 Prairial CCXIV from Evan Prodromou

It's the first day of Prairial -- dedicated to luzerne (alfalfa) -- and I'm in Mont-Tremblant for the wedding of friends Anne-Marie and Jeff. We got a late start last night, and we didn't get into the rental until 9PM. By then, we were too exhausted to do anything but order pizza and beer for delivery and crash out.

I have a terrible time getting out the door for road trips -- sometimes I don't leave until sunset for a trip I was supposed to start in the morning. In a way, it's a nice thing; I have the kind of lifestyle that lets me take time to do things the way I want to do them. On the other hand, having an 8-month-old means that you need to hit certain marks in the day, or Sleep Insanity ensues.

We lucked out last night; the baby got up from a nap, got in the car, and was a little burbling bundle of curiosity and joy for the entire drive. It was raining hammers and nails, and I think she really likes the sound of the rain and seeing water fall from the sky. I'm not sure she remembers the snow any more, even though it's only been about 6 weeks since we've had any.

We're staying at the Wyndham Cap Tremblant, in an amazingly affordable condo rental. It's right up the hill from Mont Tremblant Village, which is my favorite part of the area. I guess it's just the season that's giving us the good deal; Mont Tremblant apparently is really cheap outside of the July-August and January-February rushes.

Victoria Day Weekend

It's Victoria Day weekend in Canada, which is the unofficial start to summer (much like Memorial Day is in the United States). In Quebec, of course, honoring the monarchy is unconscionable, so the day has been previously officially called the fete de Dollard, after the Adam Dollard des Ormeaux, a colonial hero. But DDO has fallen out of favor, and the day is now known as Journée nationale des patriotes.

But I've never heard anyone call it anything but Victoria Day.
