Scoble barada nikto, apparently. Through Don, Doc, and Nicholas Carr, I found out the news that Robert Scoble left Microsoft. I've liked his Scobleizer blog for a while, but I guess being on the road this week I haven't really been reading so much. Cool beans for him, bad news for Microsoft. Hope things work out and they get another nice guy to be their designated hoo-man.
Weird to get that kind of news mediated through so many blogs, though. I hope Gort doesn't go on a rampage.

Wikipedia
Speaking of the unlikeable Nicholas Carr, he's quoted in an article in the NYT, Growing Wikipedia Revises Its 'Anyone Can Edit' Policy. I'm the last person to defend the protection policy of Wikipedia, but I'll be honest: I don't see how the project would keep any dedicated users otherwise. It's a stress relief tool more than anything else.
What I found amazing was that only 82 articles on WP en: are protected, and 179 are "semi-protected". Why is that even close to a big deal?

Another perfect day in paradise
We spent the day here in Long Beach in Southern California, mostly at Maj's parents' house in Belmont Shores. They've got a great place: a big two-story adobe house with a huge enclosed courtyard in the back.
Maj and I worked on the on Wikitravel on our laptops, while Amita June played in the fountain out back. She's gotten adjusted to the California timezone now, and she's sleeping and eating well now. In this weather she's running (well... cruising) around in just a diaper, but she's feeling great.
I ran down to Walmart in the late afternoon and picked up a ton of baby equipment. We're going to be here almost a whole nother week, and it doesn't make sense not to have a stroller, a baby seat, dot dot dot. Walmart stuff is good-enough quality and cheap as hell.
When I got back, we headed down to the beach and saw the sunset. Amita June dipped a couple of times into the ocean, but the noise freaked her out quite a bit. Maj got her down in the sand and the water and had her laughing hysterically again.
It's so nice walking through SoCal beach towns; they really are some of the best places to be in all the world.

Love/Hate
I love it that in the last 6-12 months people have been blogging about Wikitravel and how useful and well-filled-out it is. Old blog entries used to say things like, "I hope this new idea works" or "Nothing much there yet, but the idea is good." I like that we're making a good first impression, like on this post in the Gadling travelers' blog. Dig this:
- If you are a serious traveler and you have not spent some time playing around on WikiTravel, you're missing out. The guides here are nicely filled out (for certain areas, that is), by people who know these places well or who have been there. It is like have a Lonely Planet or Rough Guides online and for free.
What do I hate? When people spell it "WikiTravel" instead of "Wikitravel". Gar.
